Thursday Thoughts: For Neck Pain, The Eyes Have It!

Do you use gaze to help restore cervical rotation? If not, you are missing out on a simple tool to help improve this motion.

Try this
  • palpate lightly around your occiput on both sides
  • look to the left and look to the right
  • do you feel contraction of the posterior suboccipital muscles?

Research has shown using gaze can help reduce cervical pain and improve ROM. Here is another article on gaze and EMG results.

The next time you're doing cervical rotation correctives, or a repeated loading strategy, have the patient gaze in the direction of limitation first to preload the motor pattern for that motion. At the barrier, make sure they are still gazing in that direction before you add PNF, a mob etc. See if it helps, it often does!
